Evaluation Question 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Since our film has virtually no budget and no notable names it will most probably go to an independent film distributor such as Gravitas Ventures or Passion River, these are independent film distributors and the reason why a independent film distributor will accept our film is because the oligopoly companies such as Paramount and Warner Brothers will only distribute films that have had a lot of more qualities such as a higher budget, experienced director, high profile actors and a good screenplay script, our film didn’t have any professions in the production of this film it was a student film, ideas were thought on the spot and improvisation was something we did a lot of compared to the films produced by the big film companies such as Disney, Disney spend months or even years developing ideas, look for spots across the worlds to film there films and have hundreds of millions to do so this is why a independent film distributor will be the type of media distributor of our short film.

Evaluation number 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

From our preliminary task, we believe that we have learnt a substantial amount of information about the software of editing, the filming itself and the experience of the whole product.

Compared to the preliminary we spent more time on the media product, which obviously meant that we would gain more experience throughout the creation of our product. By gaining this experience we are then able to use this knowledge for later on in life if we need to edit any footage.
When filming the main project, we all got the chance to film the project so we all gained the knowledge that we could then use for any relevance in our work. By gaining this knowledge we no longer need any training on this type of camera to film any later projects.

The experience of the whole product is valuable to all of us, as this has given us a choice to what we want to do next year and on further. Some of us didn't enjoy the experience, but others did enjoy the experience  and will therefore try to carry on with this next year and potentially look to go into this field of work later on in life.

Evaluation number 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

We found that our audience would be mainly male around the late teenager age. To attract this age and gender of the audience we had to add in content that they would either relate to or enjoy.
The content we added that they would relate to includes a relatively fast car, a pub (including drinking).
The content we added that this target audience would enjoy includes violence, weapons. This content would attract our audience because they do relate to this content because society has changed to enjoy this specific content.

By adding this content we hope that we would have enticed the right audience for our film to ultimately generate the best possible reviews and generate a good amount of revenue.

Evaluation question 1

Evaluation - Moontree productions.
  1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products.
Our film fits into the crime thriller genre, and the conventions of this genre are the following:
  1. Dark lighting
  2. Fast paced, intense music
  3. Use of weapons
  4. False suspense
  5. Good vs. Evil
These conventions can be found in different films in this genre. An example of dark lighting   in a film that we used for our textual analysis is ‘Taken’. In the beginning of this film, there is an example of dark lighting when the antagonist is reminiscing of when he was still together with his ex-wife and child. Our film conforms to this convention of Crime thrillers during the scene inside the pub and when the protagonist is walking up his stairs.
The second convention of this genre is fast paced, intense music. An example of this convention in a film is in “Snatch.” This can be found during the robbery of jewelry shop selling diamonds. Our film conforms to this convention, and this can be found during the robbery itself and the getaway scene.
The third convention of this genre is the use of weapons. An example of this convention can be found in one of our textual analysis’s, this film is “No country for old men.” Our film conforms to this convention and the example can be found during the robbery when the antagonist uses a handgun to rob the pub
The fourth convention of this genre is false suspense. An example of this convention can be found in Jaws. Although this isn’t a crime thriller, false suspense can be found in this on many occasions when the victims think the shark will attack again. Our film doesn’t conform to this convention of crime thrillers, but this is because we only filmed the opening of the film, we needed to strike the audience with suspense to entice them to continue to watch. We would use this in the further filming of our media product.
The fifth convention of this genre is Good vs Evil. An example of this convention can be found in most films within this genre, but a specific example would be transporter 2. Good vs evil is the foundation of this genre, this is because it is based around crime anyway so there is bound to be some sort of good and some sort of evil. Our media product conforms to this convention, this can be found when the protagonist attempts to stop the antagonist robbing the pub, but he fails and the protagonist is killed.

Evaluation Question 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our media product represent one social group in particular, teenagers, or young adults. As we see in the film, there are several teenagers inside the pub and they are socializing. One is working behind the bar and two are having a drink together. In this day and age, young people enjoy socializing and going out to have a drink together. The teenager behind the bar also represents them realistically as well, because young people tend to work in bars these days and I believe that our media product represents the teenager and young adult social group successfully.

Evaluation: Question #6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

In the process of constructing this media product, collectively as a group we have learnt the following:

  1. How to find the best shot for each scene (camera movements etc)
  2. How to use the editing software properly
  3. How to construct the soundtrack
We found out how to find the best shot for each scene when we were put out on filming really. We done this by, before shooting each shot we discussed what was going to be happening in the scene, then chose the best shot, often by trial and error. Often as well we done trial runs with the camera to see the best shot and then filmed it for a real run.

Again we discovered how to edit our footage properly by actually using it, and trial and error. As we went along with editing our footage and we found ourselves stuck with what to do, we would often stay after official hours of work, and used trial and error to get to grips with the software, we would then put it to the test in the official hours of work.

Most of our group had previous knowledge of garage band, so we knew how to create the soundtrack. There were a few thing which we hadn't come across on the software, however again we stayed after hours of work and used trial and error to discover how to use the package properly and then put it to the test in the hours of work.

Audience identity

As you can see above, this is our audience profile. This tells us what age our target audience would be, roughly and information about them. The main age of the audience is 16, which would mean the BBFC classification would be a 15, which suits our media product anyway, as there isn't enough violent or offensive content in to be an 18.
All of the people we interviewed were male, which sets our audience profile to be mainly male, which is what we expected anyway, however there may be a few exceptions, we believe our audience gender divide will be roughly 70/30% (majority male)
The interviewees said that their interested included gaming, sports and reading. By seeing these interests, this would give us a rough idea as to what to use as tie-ins or promotional products etc, by promoting these products with our film this would give us a larger audience. Also what the interviewees do in their spare time related to this.
All of our interviewees were still in full time education, by seeing this and knowing our BBFC we will know that most of our audience will be in the student priced area at cinemas, so if we chose to exhibit at independent cinemas we may be able to negotiate a lower price of tickets in the student bracket to gain more audience, and potentially make more profit (price elasticity.) Again, our interviewees said they receive their money through their parents or part time jobs, so they wouldn't have much disposable income, meaning that the negotiating of prices may be a good idea.

Evaluation number 4

Who would be the audience for your media product?

The audience for our film would be mostly males aged between 15 and 25. This is because our film would appeal to people of that age and get the most interest from them. When we were planning our film we thought about what would appeal to us the most and how we could show it in our film.
A high paced, adrenaline fueled robbery and high speed get away would appeal to our audience between the ages of 15 and 19 and then the story line and the feelings shown in the protagonists face at the end show that he isn’t really a killer and he wishes he hadn’t done it, so that part of our film appeals to the older age bracket of our target audience.
